Monuments
The Old Cathedral at the Metropoleos Square, a small church of the 12th century. The new Cathedral was built after 1840 and it is an imposing building.
The Kapnikarea in the middle of Ermou Str. is one of the best known churches in Athens. It was built in the 11th century.
The Monastery Dependency of the Holy Sepulchre at Plaka was originally a monastery. It was built in the 17th century.
At Plaka you will also encounter other Byzantine
churches, among which are:
- St Catherine’s of the 11th century,
- St Nicholas Ragavas at
Anaphiotika,
- the church of the Saviour of Kotakis in Kydathenaeon Str. of the 11th-12th century
- the church of the Saviour
Lykodemos, also known as the Russian Church, in Philellenon Str., which was built in 1031,
- the temple of the St Apostles in the area of the Ancient Market excavations of the early 10th century
- the Pantanassa at Monasteraki Square, also of the 10th century and
- the church of St Demetrius Loubadiares at the intersection of Dionysiou Areopagitou and Apostolou Pavlou
