PIRAEUS | General
Information
Piraeus is the largest port in the Balkans; and it is washed by the Saronikos bay. It has three ports, the central port, Mikrolimano or Tourkolimano and Marina
Zeas, where you will see lots of people strolling along their docks. It distances only half an hour from the center of Athens.
The central port of Piraeus is opposite the beautiful railway station, so access is easy and quick. The tempo at the port is very fast. Piraeus is always full of life with many travel agencies and shipping companies and similar activities. At dusk things are more peaceful, the port quiets until night falls and people again surge into the streets and the various stores.
For years now Piraeus has been developing into a large commercial center with taller and taller office buildings in its center that bear no resemblance to the old city. Exceptions to this rule are the quarters of
Chagekyriakeio, Peiraike, Prophetes Elias, Kaminia and Palaia
Kokkinia, with the old refugee houses, some of which restored, their narrow alleys and hospitable people, which are definitely much more cozy and picturesque.
From the Piraeus port leave all the coastal lines to the Greek islands, but also to ports abroad.
You will, finally, find many options as far as accommodation and entertainment are concerned, for every taste and every income.
